Chapter Thirteen

Gabe awoke with a start, just like he had the day before, and immediately stood. His mind was already replaying the previous day’s events while he grabbed a quick shower. Barely noting the nanites forming his tact pants and T-shirt that he preferred, Gabe grabbed his rocket boots and headed out to the kitchen.

Disappointed when he didn’t see Sephina or Dar, Gabe moved into the kitchen and tried to figure out where to get the green energy drink Sephina usually made, and the leftovers from the night before. He’d made himself a drink and finished off his leftovers but still no Dar or Sephina.

Deciding he didn’t want to waste the morning while everyone slept, Gabe headed down the hallway and knocked softly on Bart’s door. It opened immediately, and Bart stood smiling in the doorway as if he’d been waiting for someone to get him.

“Sir? May I be of assistance?” Bart was clearly hoping he was needed.

“Yeah, come on.” Gabe led the way out of the living area and down the hallway to the training room.

“Sir, do you plan on training? Where are Sephina and Dar?” Bart asked.

Gabe walked into the training room and smiled at the now-familiar surroundings. In the center of the safe zone between the door and first scenario pedestal, Gabe did a series of stretches, then put on his rocket boots.

“I’m going to get started while they’re still sleeping. The only scenario I have left is the Space station one, and I want to do a quick run-through of the others before I tackle that one.” Gabe stood and held his hands out as if to launch himself airborne.

“Sir! Maybe we should wait for Sephina and Dar? Are you sure you should be doing this alone considering what’s at risk?” Bart didn’t think this was a good idea. Anything could go wrong.

Gabe laughed and launched himself into the air. “You heard Sephina, I have to do this a lot for anyone to believe the results. Besides, they’ll be up soon. You can keep an eye on me until then.”

Not wanting to listen to Bart’s arguments against it, Gabe flew up to the aerial pedestal for the spaceship battle. Telling his nanites to use the stun setting on his weapons, he flew across the scenario barrier and easily dodged the first blasts from the ships.

The last ship flashed defeat when Dar and Sephina came running into the room. She was waving her arms, and Gabe assumed it was in congratulations when he dropped several feet in the air. Wishing his nanites could talk back to him, Gabe headed towards the now screaming Sephina and Dar when he suddenly dropped like a rock.

Knowing he was going to hit the ground hard, Gabe did his best to remain focused and roll as if he’d been skydiving. Pain blasted through his ankles for a second before he rolled across the floor, stopping inches from a wall.

“Don’t move!” Sephina called out, running to him.

Dar reached Gabe first and knelt at his feet.
